Hawai'i Kauai Island Trip Day9

In the morning we went to the airport.

We first flew to Maui, then from Maui to San Jose. In the flight from Kauai to Maui, the landing part was the scariest I have ever had. The descending was not smooth, it was periodic. When the plane landed, it was very fast on a runway. I was worried if the plane could stop by the end of runway. After stopping, I immediately saw the edge of runway. Then, the flight from Maui to San Jose was delayed. There was a mechanical issue. Hawaiian Airline had a mechanical problem on the way to Hawaii, and now also the case on the way back to California. What is wrong with them? We were bored and there was no seat at the gate, so we sat on the floor, although it was a bad manner. Hawaiian Airline provided a small dinner on board, but it was not enough for me again. The plane was old and the each seats didn't have individual screens. My.R complained about it.

We arrived at San Jose airport. After everyone picked their baggages up, the terminal suddenly became very quiet. For some reasons, there was a piano near the baggage claim area and a man started playing it. He was definitely not professional, because I could tell there were many mistakes, but the play reflected his personality. It was actually very, very heartwarming. I wanted to see him play closely, so I stood by the piano. He smiled at me while he was playing. It blew my tiredness away.

It was a very interesting, fun, and great trip. I fulfilled my childhood dream with nice companions. Thank you all for the memorable trip.

そして朝早く我々は空港へと向かった。

最初のフライトはカウアイ島からマウイ島へ。マウイ島に着陸するのが異常に怖かった。というのも通常、着陸するとき飛行機は徐々にスムーズに高度を落としていくものだが、この時は全く違ったのだ。飛行機は段階的に高度を落として行ったのだ。つまり、真下に少し下り、そして少し先に進む、そして急降下、少し先に進む、といった具合にまるで階段を下りているかのようだった。そして異常にそれが長く続き飛行機が止まったのは滑走路の終わりのわずか手前。ぎょえー。

私の仮説としては、ハワイアンエアラインはベテランのパイロットはハワイと本土を結ぶ飛行機を操縦。そして若手の経験がまだ少ないパイロットはハワイの島間のフライトを担当。そのため、カウアイーマウイのフライトはこのような着陸だったのでは。。？と思った。

そして次のフライト：マウイからカリフォルニア。機械の不具合で遅れ。うーむ。カリフォルニアからハワイに来た時もハワイアンエアラインは機械の不具合で遅れたのだ。やれやれ。これがハワイ流なのかもしれない。MrRは不満を言っていた。

そしてなんとかサンノゼに到着。荷物をピックアップし、MrNが車を取りに行った。その間バッケージアリアでMrNを待っていたのだが、すごく静かだ。いつもならバックをとって速攻帰路に着くから、バックを取り終わった後のバッケージエリアの静寂さというものは知らなかった。静かに座っていると、なぜかピアノの音が聞こえて来た。なんでか知らないが、ピアノが荷物ピックアップエリアにあり誰かがピアノを弾いていたのだ。上手ではないが、とても優しい音色で平和なほっこりとした気分にさせてくれた。

ともかく、このカウアイの旅、エキサイティングなものだった！そして自然の景色に感動た。言葉では言い表せないので、ハイライトの３枚の写真を添付しておく。

Hawai'i Kauai Island Trip Day8

Day8 was the final day on which we had time to do some activities. We had an open day for day 8. So we decided to do a "very Hawaiian" thing; walking along the beach. We were already camping on the beach, so we walked there in the morning. We thought that we would just walk a mile or so, but Ms.R walked very fast and she continued walking for more than one hour.

Along the beach there was an U.S. military facility and we saw some detecting devices. They might monitor enemy countries. Mr.S1 turned around after we started walking along the facility. We ended up walking around four miles. On the way back, we saw two people. They had the similar itinerary to ours. Mr.S2 talked with them while Mr.N was swimming in the ocean. I laid on the beach and soaked up the sunshine. I felt comfortable and thought that finally doing a "very Hawaiian" thing. I remembered that my co-worker had asked me why I would go backpacking on the dangerous trail, why not relax on the beach (meaning she thought that we were crazy). I couldn't give her a good answer at that time but I did at least half a day what she had suggested. 

After we enjoyed the beach for half a day, we packed and left the campground. From the Polihale beach to the main road was unpaved. Mr.S1's car got a flat there. It reminded Mr.S2 and me of the incident in the early morning on 4th of July. We got a flat in the middle of nowhere in Yosemite. Neither of us knew how to change a flat, and NOBODY stopped for us. However, this time several cars stopped and asked us if we were okay and needed help. It was nice but I don't know why nobody helped us in CA (sad). Mr.S2 and I remembered how hard untightening nuts first, then we got confused which side of a donut should be outside, and the fact we tightened nuts too much after we put the donut. This time we didn't need an instruction book.

We returned the snorkeling gear at a rental shop and went to a hotel. I preferred camping rather than staying at a hotel, but some people hate flying with dirty clothes. I don't care being clean (and nobody cares whether I'm clean or dirty). I took a shower and enjoyed the final poke dinner. Salmon poke from Ishihara market was so good.

カウアイ島８日目、この旅の最終日だ。この日は何も予定していない予備日だったので”ハワイアン”なアクティビティとしてポリハレビーチを歩くことにした。最初は、まぁ少し歩くか、程度で歩き始めたのだが。。。MsRが異常に速くどんどん先を歩いて行くので結局行き帰りで２時間以上もビーチを歩いた。 

キャンプグランドから１時間ほど歩いたところにはビーチ沿いにアメリカの軍基地があり何やら検知器のようなものも見えた。どうやら敵の監視をしているようだ。

キャンプグランドに戻る途中２人がビーチで休んでいた。すかさずMrS２が話しかける。MrS２いろんな人に話しかけるのすきだなー。MrS２が彼らと話している間MrNは海へ入って泳いでいた（といっても犬かき泳ぎ）。私は砂浜で横になり日差しを楽しんだ。ようやく最終日になって”普通の”ハワイ旅行者がやることを経験した。ハワイへ行く前に同僚からなぜ危険なトレイルをバックパックするのか？なぜビーチで横になってリラックスしないのか？と不思議がられたが、ようやくそれができた。同僚を納得させる返事はもちろんできなかった。彼女は我々は相当おかしいグループだと思っていることだろう。というか、大半の人は我々のようなハワイ旅行は理解しがたいのだと思う。しかし我々にとってはこれがパラダイスなのだ。

ビーチの散歩を楽しんだ後は、テントを撤収しキャンプグランドをあとにした。キャンプグラウンドと舗装道路の間に土の道路があるのだが、そこでなんとMrS１のレンタカーのタイヤの一つがパンクした。

このパンクを見て、少し前に起きたパンクを思い出した。MrS２と私がヨセミテ内の道路をドライブしていた時タイヤの一つがパンクしたのだ。 その時２人ともパンクを直したことがなく、車についているガイドブックを取り出してそれを道路で見ながらパンクを直していたのに、誰も止まってくれなかったのだ。それに比べ、ここハワイでは何人かの車が止まってくれ、ヘルプ必要？などと声をかけてくれた。ハワイ、いいなーと思った一コマだ。

そしてスノーケリングギアをショップに返しに行き、最終日の夜はホテルへ止まった。飛行機に乗る前にシャワーを浴びて一応汗臭い体を洗わないと飛行機内がヒドイことになるかもしれないからだ。そして最終日の晩餐：もちろんポキ！サーモンポキ、すごーく美味しかった。

Hawai'i Kauai Island Trip Day7 no.2

We went to the campground right next to the Polihale beach. The beach is very long: 17 miles (27.34 Km). I had never seen such a wide beach. It was amazing. We saw the sunset over the ocean. Sun went down over the island of Niihau. The color of ocean is very different from California's or Japan's, although all are the Pacific Ocean. We sat on the slope and ate salmon and tuna poke and chocolate. Mr.S1 ate raw yam. It reminded me of the early days in the U.S. : I was surprised and thought ridiculous that people here eat raw broccoli, cauliflower, or spinach. I had eaten only boiled ones. Then I was remembering that I might be more weird, because I like raw fish, moving fish, raw shell, raw beef, horse sashimi more than any Americans.

From the evening local kids were playing music and chatting loud nearby until midnight. However, the other tourists told us not to tell local Hawaiians to shut up, so we couldn't complain. In fact, I heard that the kids had asked Mr.R if it was okay to have a party, and Mr.R said okay. After the kids became quiet, I had a very good sleep. 

そして夕方ポリハレビーチへ向かった。ここでキャンプするのだ。このビーチは本当に長い！！２７キロもあるのだ。こんなに長いビーチは見たことがない。ものすごいところでキャンプでき本当に楽しく幸せ。

このビーチでは夕日、日の入りを見た。写真に写っているように夕焼け、そして大きな夕日が素晴らしい。夕日がニイハウ島の向こうに落ちていく。綺麗だ。

ハワイの海の色は特別だと思う。日本のとも違うしカリフォルニアのとも違う。３つとも太平洋ではあるがそれぞれが格別だ。

我々はビーチの砂の丘に座り夕日を眺めながら夕食をとった。もちろん私はポキ！スーパーの惣菜コーナーで買ったもの。サーモン、アヒ、たこ、いか、などなど色々な味付けのものをこの旅で食した。どれも最高。そして安い。やはり本場で食べるポキはいい。

MrS１はヤム芋を生でかじっていて皆を驚かせた。MrS１はビーガンなのでまだわかるが、アメリカ人は本当に野菜を生でかじるのが好きだ。料理するのが面倒というのもあるのだろう。ブロッコリー、人参、セロリ、インゲン、カリフラワーなど、とにかく生でドレッシングにディップして食べる。パーティーのおつまみだったり、職場でのスナックとしても生野菜は人気。アメリカに来た当初は、えー！これも生で？！と驚いていたが、今では何とも思わない。何事も何でもあり、自由な国。

夜中９時ごろから０時頃まで地元の高校生らしき人たちが音楽をかけておしゃべりし睡眠が妨げられたが、ガイドブックによるとローカルの人たちには文句を言うべきではないとのことなので我慢した。０時頃静かになってからはよく眠れた。

 

Hawai'i Kauai Island Trip Day7

On the 6th day, we hiked in the Waimea Canyon. It is called the Grand Canyon of Pacific. It is a magnificent canyon with really big falls. At the bottom of the canyon, there was a river.

Mr.S1 was walking ahead, but after we reached the falls, we couldn't find him. It was the half way point, but he thought that the falls was the destination (I thought so too until Mr.N mentioned it), and he seemed to have turned back. We asked several strangers if they had seen an Indian guy with a hat and shorts and everyone said that he was heading back. Because he always hikes very fast, we were sure that it was impossible to catch up with him. So we gave up trying to catch up with him and we took a break at the viewpoint. I ate fishcake and mochi.

On the way back to the trailhead, we ran into our friend Mr.G from the Bay Area, California. What a coincidence! He was in Hawaii, on the same island, on the same trail, at the same time. We chatted for a while, and then Mr.G reminded us of that he had met Mr.S1 on the trail. We thought that Mr.S1 might be quite annoyed with our slow pace, so we said goodbye to Mr.G and went to the trailhead. We checked out the view of Niihau and went to the beach. 

My first sight of Niihau and my first learn of Niihau was here. Island of Niihau is located in about 18 miles west of Kauai, so it is visible from Kauai. The island is owned by Robinson family. Total population is only 200 people. Primary language is Niihau dialect of Hawaiian. No water system, no paved road, etc. No hotel or accommodation, so I guess not many tourists go there. It is mysterious to me. 

旅の６日目はワイメアキャニオン（ワイメア渓谷）をハイキング。ここは太平洋のグランドキャニオンと呼ばれている。 さすがはグランドキャニオンと呼ばれるだけあって深く壮大な渓谷が見れた。渓谷の底に川が流れているのが見える。この構図もアリゾナのグランドキャニオンの底にコロラド川が流れているのと似ている。ワイメアキャニオンを見てアリゾナのグランドキャニオンの楽しかった旅を思い出した。というかその時と同じメンバーでカウアイに来たのだった。最高のバックパッキング仲間だ。

その仲間の一人MrS１が先頭を歩いていたのだが、滝を一緒に見た後、MrS１が見当たらない。実際、滝はハイクの実際の目的地への通過地点（半分）に過ぎなかったのだが、みんな滝を見てそこが目的地だと思っていた。（MrNが指摘するまでは）。MrS１もおそらく滝がこの日のハイクの目的地と勘違いしトレイルヘッドへ戻り歩き始めたのでは。という結論に至った。そこで我々もトレイルヘッドへと歩き始めることにしたが、MrS１は一番歩くのが早いので追いつくことは不可能。ということで普通におしゃべりしながら歩くことにした。人も沢山いるし危険なトレイルでもないので特に心配せず。

さらに滝方面に向かって歩いてくる人数人（いくつかのグループ）にMrS１の特徴を話し見かけたか聞いたところ、 全員がそういう人見たよと言ったのでMrS１が先を歩いていることはほぼ確実となった。

さらにトレイルヘッドに戻って歩いている途中に、なんと！カリフォルニアのハイキング仲間に遭遇！！！MrGは我々と同じハイキンググループに属する友達。なんという奇遇だろうか。同じ日にカリフォルニアの友達 にハワイのワイメアキャニオンのトレイルで会うとは。そしてMrGもMrS１とすれ違ったとのこと。これでMrS１が先を歩いていることは２００％確実となった。

その後、隣、約３０キロ西に位置するニイハウ島をみた。日本語表記ではニイハウ島ということだが、ハワイ・アメリカ式で発音すると”ニーイーハウ”。ロビンソン一家が個人所有する島で人口は２００人ほど。第一言語がハワイアン（ニイハウ方言）なのはこの島だけ。舗装された道もないし 水道の設備もなし（雨をためて水を得ている）。ホテルや宿泊地はなく訪れる人も少ないと思われる。なんだか謎な島を海岸から眺めた。ニイハウ島は見たことも聞いたこともなかったのですごく謎だった。一つ知識が増えた＾＾

Beach we camped

In the morning at the breakfast, we chatted with random campers. They offered us hot water. Because our stove from Walmart was broken by using only one day, we were happy to have hot liquid.

On the 6th day, we went to the south shore and went out for snorkeling. It was my first time trying it. I should have been able to breath through a tube, but immediately I went inside the ocean, the fair amount of sea water came into my mouth. It was so salty. I had forgotten how salty the sea water was. To fix my gear, I put my body Mr.N's back so that I could breath above the sea. By doing that, Mr.N sank into the ocean (FYI: I apologized him at least three times afterwards). I had enough sodium chloride that day. Not only breathing part, but also to put goggles tightly on my face not to lose my contact lenses made me nervous. Despite of those factors, I was able to see many fish and a turtle. They were very cute. Mr.S1 and Mr.S2 were also having fun with their first snorkeling as well.

Then Mr.S2 got terrible Thai pad and went to the campground and ate poke, beer, and whiskey (Mr.R). Mr.R got happy with whisky and went to bed on a hummock. Immediately I heard snoring and my tent was next to his hummock....

 

朝、朝食をとった後、キャンプ場にいたキャンパー達と雑談。彼らはなんとポットを持って来ていた。我々のストーブは。。。初日にウォルマートで買ったのだが１日で壊れてしまいお湯を沸かすことができなかったのだ。とほほ。さすがはウォルマート。ウォルマートは”超”アメリカンな質も悪いが値段も安いスーパーだ。安い服、安い電化製品、安いキャンプ用品、安め（ものすごい安いわけではない）食品、植物、などとにかくなんでも売っている。安いけど本当にすぐ壊れるのだ。。実際キャンプ用のストーブが1回お湯を沸かしただけで壊れた！

日本にもウォルマートが来ていたらしいが、撤退したとのこと。納得。やはりアメリカのどか買いスタイルは日本には合わないだろう。

カウアイキャンプの旅６日目は南のビーチでスノーケリングをした。 これが私の人生初のスノーケリングとなった。スノーケリング：スノーケルを通して空気を吸うことができるはずなのだが。。。。なぜか海水がスノーケルから絶え間なく入って来て息ができない！そして海水は相当しょっぱい。息ができないので仕方なくMrNの背中を押して這い上がり息を吸った。これによりMrNは海の中へ。魚もとカメを観れ, すごく可愛かったのだが息が絶え絶えだったのと波が大きすぎたためしばらくして退散することにした。

その後MrS２が買ったタイ料理のヌードル（ベジタリアン）は美味しくなかったということで、キャンプ場に直行。この日はサンクスギビングの当日（実際にアメリカ人がターキー、パイなどたらふく食べて飲む日）だったので私も負けじとポキを食べた。MrRは大好きなウィスキーをがぶ飲みしその後いびきをかいて熟睡していた（あーキャンプグランドが狭くMrRの近くにテントを張っていた私。。。）

Kalalau Trail in the morning

Day5 we needed to go back all the way in a day. We took 2 days to come to the Kalalau beach, and our pace was 1 mile/hour because of rugged and muddy trails. So we started hiking at 6 a.m. to finish hopefully before the sunset.

On the way it rained on and off. The rain sometimes looked like a curtain. It was pretty. The pattern of raining reminded me of my days biking to school in Tokyo. It was one-way 10 km, and sometimes I got soaked, because it was unpredictable when it would start raining. The rain texture was similar to the one I remembered. I felt nostalgic and good. The scenery going opposite direction was slightly different from the views we hiked in, and I really enjoyed it.

We arrived at the trailhead by 4 p.m. Then we went to a grocery store and I got poke. At one grocery store called Foodland there was a person who was selling Kauai coffee. She noticed that I am Japanese and talked to me in Japanese, however, the grammar was terrible with strong accent. So I answered in English. She was probably 3rd or 4th generation of Japanese American. She said that her husband produced coffee in his plantation, but according to Mr.N, her coffee was roasted in Kauai but not made in Kauai. State of Hawaii is supposed to have many Japanese Americans, but I didn't see clues in Kauai. I only noticed that one grocery store called Ishihara is Japanese name. Also I didn't see a Japanese tourist in Kauai. It was interesting.

I finished the day by eating poke in a tent, which made me happy. 

カララウトレイル５日目、最終日。この日の予定はカララウビーチからトレイルヘッドまで１日で戻ること。トレイルヘッドからは２日かけてカララウビーチまで来たことを考えるとできるだけ早く出発しなければ、ということで朝６時にはハイキング開始。少し歩いて振り返ると朝日がカララウビーチを照らしていたのがとても印象的。忘れられない瞬間だ（写真１枚目）。

この日は雨が降ったり止んだりしていた。時々 、雨が山の斜面でカーテンの様に見え綺麗だった。この降ったり止んだりする雨、東京の雨に似ている。大学まで１０キロ毎日通っていた頃が思い出され懐かしくなった。ハワイってアメリカだけどカリフォルニアと言うよりは、わりと日本に似ているんだなぁと実感。

午後４時にトレイルヘッドに無事到着。そしてスーパーへ行き食材を調達。私は再び惣菜コーナーでポキを買って美味しさを堪能。スーパーの試食コーナーの人になぜか変な日本語で話しかけられた。おそらく日系３−４世のハワイアンと思われる。カウアイコーヒーを勧められたが、えらく高かったので買わず。ハワイのコーヒーならコナコーヒーの方がいいので遠慮しておいた。彼女はそのコーヒーは夫のプランテーションで栽培されたものだと言ったが、パッケージにはカウアイでローストされただけで栽培はカウアイではなかった。うーむ。何はともあれ、無事にカララウトレイルから戻れてよかった。そしてカララウトレイルは本当に美しく、楽しい場所だった。

Hawai'i Kauai Island Trip Day4 no.2

On the way back we stayed on the main trail. It was very obvious and straightforward. We were not sure why we missed the main trail. When we came back 0.5 mile away from the campground, we found the place we went to the wrong path. The wrong path looked clearer than the main one, so we made a sign.

There were a lot of cats looming around at the campground. When we were having dinner, a baby cat approached us. She was a grey tabby, or American short hair. Tabby cats are my favorite. 

Ms.R gave her some beef jerkies and she really liked them. The tabby got on Ms.R's lap. I was jealous. So I gave her some tuna. She liked it and licked the tuna pack. Mr.R was drinking whiskey, so I put a few drops of whiskey on the tuna pack. The cat was as if saying, "No!" I forced her to lean her face onto the alcohol covered tuna, but she resisted. She disliked whiskey. She knows what to eat and what should not eat. 

Then I gave her pea snacks. She was not interested at all. Then I gave the cat caramel milk chocolate. She liked it. I put caramel on the pea snack and gave her but she refused it. She seemed to hate pea snacks. I didn't know chocolate is toxic to cats, but it was really tiny amount, so it turned out it was okay after I looked up the lethal dose.

The campground on Kalalau Beach was ultra great not only because being surrounded by pretty beach, falls and mountains, but also being surrounded by cute cats. 

休息と水泳を楽しんだ後はトレイルを通ってカララウビーチへと戻り始めた。なぜ昨日は迷ってしまったのか？！トレイルは非常に鮮明で迷うところなどないように見える。しかし！なぜ我々はトレイルから外れてしまったのかがわかるポイントがあった。それはキャンプ地からたった０．５マイル（０・８キロ）程度のところ。２つのトレイルのジャンクションでメインのトレイルよりなぜか間違ったトレイルの方が広く、かつ、より使われているように見える。今後、ハイカー達が間違えないようケレンを立ててサインを作った。これで間違えてコミュニティーガーデンに行く人もいなくなるだろう。。。。面白くないかもしれないが。。

夜。たくさんの猫がキャンプグランドのあちこちを歩いている！夜ご飯を食べていると赤ちゃん猫が我々に近づいて来た。MsRがビーフジャーキーをあげると子猫はすごく喜んでいる。私は少しツナをあげた。ツナに少しウィスキーをかけると。。子猫は”やだ！”という感じで食べない。枝豆スナックにも全く興味なし。しかしキャラメルミルクチョコレートは食べた。チョコレートは猫に良くないというのを知らなかったが、後で調べて見るとLD５０には程遠い量だったのでよかった。

そしてカララウビーチの夕焼け空を楽しんだ（２枚目の写真）。こんな綺麗なビーチと夕焼けを満喫できるとはなんて幸せなんだろうと思ったひと時だった。
