Montaña de Oro State Park

Came back to Pacific Ocean! During 2021 winter trip, we decided to visit some people in California: why not go for hiking on the way then!?

Mr.N chose Montaña de Oro State Park. Mr.N is from Montana. What is the connection? He chose this particular park due to that. As you may know, Montaña means mountain in Spanish. Since California was a part of Mexico, a lot of nature stuff is called with Spanish.

We arrived at night at the park and camped at the campground inside the park (we had a reservation). This car campground is not really close to beach or ocean view, but it was spacious and still able to hear some wave sounds. Admittedly, Big Sur campground is much more attractive than this one, in terms of ocean view, but we stayed there for accommodation.

Next morning, we saw a cat coming out from RV. That is my dream----road trip with an adventurous cat! This was my second time a cat came out of RV. First time was in New Zealand! Now RV road trip with a cat is becoming a trend?

Hiking up the hill
Anyway we started hiking to go to Valencia Peak. The highest hill in the park. As a typical California weather pattern, it was cloudy in the early morning. So the ocean was a bit gray, but still a good view. I had forgotten the weather pattern of this. Later on blue sky came out. Good timing--we started walking along the ocean. Bluff trail is about 5 miles or so, is quite nice to see blue ocean.
Arch Rock

Ocean and the rugged cliff creates such a nice view. I liked the view in the above picture especially. There is an arch rock! Arch rock is fragile and someday it will collapse, so I feel lucky to see it. This Pacific Ocean's blue is always my rout. Being from an island in Pacific Ocean, my DNA always feel home with this blue!

Sea otter
Another very exciting thing about Bluff trail is that you can spot sea otters. Some spots you can see 15 sea otters of group. I think that I saw total more than 50 sea otters. According to Ms.L, sea otters in this area were gone for a while, but now they came back again. It is good.

Next day we visited Mr.N's uncle and aunt, Mr.E and Mrs.G. It was first time in five years to see them. We had sushi takeout, watched documentary, had poke, went to Mexican place. A lot of enjoyment. Kindly Mr.E let each of us drive his Tesla! Whoa. First time in life. There are so much information on the panel at front. It was fun driving Tesla along the Pacific coast in Monterey. How many lucky people can do that in the world?

Then we visited another Mr.N's aunt Ms.H. We visited San Luis National Wildlife Refuge to look at Tule Elk. It was a driving tour. I had never done driving tour in the park. It was interesting. It was nice to see elk protected: at the same time a little sad to see elk was locked in a way, although it is a huge area. Then we went to Merced National Wildlife Refuge next day, I had never seen so many many many birds in a day. This is definitely a unique place to go if you are in the area.

Round Valley Regional Preserve

Round Valley Regional Preserve is a nice park in the East Bay, in the Bay Area, California. It is located in the east of Walnut Creek, and east of Mount Diablo.

Walnut Creek is an expensive town in the East Bay. The entire Bay Area is expensive, but Walnut is particularly expensive. AND it has this nice park.

Iconic Easy Bay's hills

This is an iconic East Bay park: rolling hills, spread trees, grass, and wide trails. When you hike after the rainy season, these hills become amazing green as I wrote several times at this blog.

Winter, however, these hills are all brown. This season is not as popular as green season, but I still love the East Bay's rolling hills. It is amazing to see the dramatic changes in these hills. It is fun coming back to this area in a different season.

Somehow, since I was little, I always like the open vista. East Bay's climate is really hot in summer, and then dry except for short rainy season, so deep forest can't be formed. Such weather pattern makes the hills are mainly on for grass with sparse trees. I like to oversee the coming rolling hills ahead from below or look over undulating hills.

Another feature of East Bay's parks are cows. A lot of parks has livestock owned by farmers. They are sometimes on the trail. It is fun seeing them.

East Bay's trail in winter and summer is not popular, because summer is very hot and winter hills are not green. However, I like this winter brown hills, too, as much as green ones. Besides there are not many people, so it is good.

A lot of parks in the Bay Area used to be place for American Indian tribes. This Round Valley Regional Preserve was home of tribes, too. According to the brochure, East Bay and San Joaquin Valley groups of native Americans met this area for trading.

Until I came to the U.S., I know little about native Americans. I am not a really big fan of history at school, however, it is interesting to learn Native American histories. A lot of mountains, national parks, forests, local trails are related to Native American histories and it can't be separated.

Most Bay Area hiking trails are related to California Indian history. One of National Parks in Colorado, Mesa Verde National Park is all about dwelling of Native Americans. I would like to write about those trips on another occasion on this blog.

After I moved to New England, I think back winter in the Bay Area is NOTHING. It is just chilly. Of course Sierra has severe winter and snow, but Bay Area hiking is pleasant for all round year.

Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve Day Hiking

Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve is a nice day hiking spot in the Bay Area. It is located south of Los Gatos in South Bay. It offers a lot of trails and great view of Santa Cruz Mountains.

I went hiking in the flower season. It was 11 miles +/-2500ft. It contains craggy ridges.

As you can see below pictures, there are so many cute colorful flowers were there. I am grateful that I can hike on such a pretty trail near my place.

The flowers are beautiful. It is no doubt that flowers are one of highlights of this hike. However, the real big highlight of this hike was.....a rattlesnake!

Hikers should be careful for rattlesnakes, because they are venomous. It is called a rattle because of their tail portion which makes rattling sounds. I was hiking on the ridge trail and looking at the view on my right side. I was walking on the right half of the trail. The rattlesnake was in the middle of trail. I was really close to it! I should have more pay attention to both sides.

Awwww! It was a really big one. It might be soaking sun on the warm dirt trail. I took pictures in a safe distance.

Then it went home. Ooops, I am glad I didn't step on it.

It was fun!

Calero Reservoir County Park Day Hiking

<Japanese version is after English:日本語は英語の後にあります>

Mr.N, Ms.H and I went day hiking in Calero Reservoir Country Park in April. We saw sooooo many pretty wild flowers.

Calero Park is in the South Bay, California. It is actually in the city of San Jose. It was relatively close where I lived, but I had never been there. I didn't know that Calero park is such a lovely place.

Please look at these colorful flowers (pictures below).

First row (left to right), Periwinkle flower, I don't know the name for the right one

Second row (left to right), California puppies+Vetch, Blue Eyed Grass

Third row (left to right), Buttercups, Scarlet Pimpernel flower

Fourth row, Checker Mallow flower

It is really a joy to hike around these wild flowers in the spring. Mr.N's aunt Ms.H used to live in San Jose, so three of us would hike once a month in the Bay Area. We never ran out of places to hike.

Usually we would go to Ms.H's house, then go hiking. Usually Ms.H's husband Mr.A made us sandwich, which is delicious,  although he doesn't come with us. Then after hiking we stop by Ms.H's house and ate dinner made by Mr.A.  There is a cat, Ms.S, at Ms.H and Mr.A's house. Ms.S is scared of humans, including Mr.A, so I couldn't pet her, but it was nice to see Ms.S.

Now I am in New England and also Mr.H and Mr.A moved out from South Bay, but our hikes are so memorable and unforgettable.

Pretty green hills
deer

At Calero, not only wild flower, we also saw pretty green hills.

Lastly, we found cute deer focused on eating. When we hike with Ms.H, we often see cute animals.

Ms.H has seen fox babies, sat close with the same specific bobcat for 20 minute, twice. Ms.H must have something secret communicating way with animals.

It was a fun hike day.

Cataract Falls

<Japanese version is after English

Cataract falls is one of the most popular hikes in Marin country in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Marin county is in the East Bay, just north of San Francisco, and it has a lot of great hikes. One of most impressive falls in the Marin county is Cataract falls.

Cataract falls

The great point about this Cataract Falls trail is that there are many continuous falls along the falls. There is dense forest covered by moss, because it is wet area. The forest plus falls makes the scenery quite unique and beautiful. This wet beauty is rare in California, especially in the drought years. Since I had arrived in California, drought got worse and worse. Then Cataract falls became smaller and smaller. However, even those drought years, the beauty was there. This is one of few places where you can see many falls in such a short distance in California.

Now living in New England, I found similar New England-ish features in the pictures of Cataract falls. Mossy trees, and rocky trails. Falls here and there near the rocks. Such stuff is found everywhere in New Hampshire. It was actually a surprising finding, to be honest. I don't know why only this portion has similar characteristic views in Marin County.

Actually, this moist views with streams, moss, and rocks are often seen in Japan as well.

It makes sense this kind of scenery comes from climate with rainy season, humid summer, fall, then winter. However it is quite rare in California. AND, that is why Cataract Falls is so popular for Bay Area hikers.

If you have never been to, it is highly recommended: it is beautiful.

Sanborn County Park Day Hiking

Sanborn County Park is a beautiful park with redwoods. The park is in the Santa Cruz mountains, in the city of Saratoga.

Redwoods are iconic trees in California. Redwoods are found in Northern California and Sierra Nevada in California. Some are also found in coastal Oregon. Other than than, there is anywhere else in the U.S. Living in the Bay Area is really lucky: you can have tremendous opportunities to see redwoods.

Redwoods are very tall. Diameters are really big, because they can live thousands of years. In the redwood forest, you can smell their nice scents. It is relaxing. In the forest, no direct sunlight and cool. It makes me feel calm.

Sanborn park has many redwoods and oak. You can hike here in the woods peacefully, since not many people are hiking there.

I always like to have lunch in the quiet forest. This is a nice local park.

Briones Regional Park Day Hiking

<Japanese version is after English>

There are many great day hiking places in the San Francisco Bay Area. Briones Regional Park is one of them located in the East Bay.

I like parks in East Bay when all the hills get green after rain. Once I went hiking in Briones after rain. I really like a number of rolling hills suddenly all get green in East Bay. It is exciting.

This day after a big rain, the trail got muddy.  Even though my feet got wet, I thought it was good, because California has been in drought for a long time.

Usually trails in the East Bay parks are really wide. It is good for me who is super sensitive to poison oak. I even get rash from poison oak by just walking nearby without touching them. Once I had systemic rash for more than 3 weeks. I couldn't focus on working without ice packs on rashes all the time. Without putting ice packs on rash, it was extremely itchy and couldn't do anything!

Anyway, after rainy days, dirt wide trails even get green. This is pretty. It was nice to walk on a fluffy road. Somehow this park is much less crowded compared to other parks nearby, such as Tilden or Cataract falls. I love those parks as well, but sometimes I need to be at more quiet places. Sitting on green grass and looking at green mountains are precious time. It always energizes me.

At the end of hike there was a big bonus. I saw a coyote! A healthy looking coyote was running on the hill. Maybe he was excited as well on a sunny day after rain. He was running downhill. It was lucky to see such a cute coyote.

If you are interested, you can check out the map here at official park site. There are many trails: you can hike short or long. https://www.ebparks.org/parks/briones/default.htm

Ed R. Levin County Park Day Hiking

<Japanese version is after English

Ed R. Levin County is a very pretty park located in Milpitas. Milpitas is a town in the San Francisco Bay Area. Milpitas is located at the end of the Bay, at the border between East Bay and South Bay.

Nice View

When you climb at the top of the hill in Ed Levin Park, you can see the end of SF bay. It is interesting and nice. Hills are green in the spring. It is pretty.

I went hiking this park with Mr.N, Ms.M, and Mr.B. Three of them are Americans. One thing I like to do during the hike in addition to enjoy the nature is learning English idioms. Especially Mr.B, as know as a book worm, has a tremendous knowledge of idioms and trivia. During this hike, I learned peanut and animal related idioms. For peanut ones: "peanut gallery", "peanut to an elephant", "if you pay peanut, you get monkeys". For cats: "a cat has nine lives", "cat nap", "cat soup". For mice: "quiet as a mouse. For rats: like rats abandoning a sinking ship.

Ms.M is my former lab member and spent 5 years on the same project together. She taught me how to survive in the U.S. It is always nice to hike with favorite people. Mr.B is Ms.M's significant other and he has unbelievably large vocabulary its etymology, and trivia. It is always fun learning something from him, especially during hikes!

Albany Bulb Evening Hike

<Japanese version is after English >

This is a really pretty place.

It is in Albany. Albany might be famous for a city of New York state. In this case, Albany in California. Albany is a small city next to Berkley.

There is a small section at the bay in Albany. The shape is like a bulb. I guess that is the reason why it is called Albany bulb (maybe not true). This is not in deep wilderness, but I like this kind of local park as much as middle of nowhere.

There are trails along the ocean in Albany bulb area. If you want you can walk forever, because this area's trail along bay is all connected. There are many local walkers and dogs at Albany bulb.

I would like to walk here in the evening, because the sunset over Golden Gate Bridge was beautiful. On the day I took picture blow, the sun looks like burning over the Golden Gate Bridge. It was special moment. Sunset is amazing because every moment has a different scenery and every moment is pretty.

This is the other side of Golden Gate Bridge seen from Marin Headlands (previously I wrote about Golden Gate Bridge hike. That one is looking at GGB from other side). I love both sides.

On the internet, post cards, all kinds of pictures are more taken by Marin Headlands, but actually this side is beautiful equally.

If you have an opportunity, I recommend seeing Golden Gate Bridge from both sides.

Arastradero Preserve Day Hiking

<Japanese after English version:

Arastradero Preserve is a nice local park in Palo Alto in California. In spring it gets green with wild flowers. It is so lovely. I have hiked here for more than 10 times and roadbiked more than 20 times.

Arastradero is a Spanish word, so it is pronounced in a Spanish way. Palo Alto is also a Spanish word. It is California and especially this area has more Spanish place names than English names.

A few year later, when I heard people pronouncing Arastradero in an English way, I felt it funny. At the same time, those would be moments for me to feel I am the real local person in the area.

This park is special to me, because of not only its beauty, but also because it is my first hike in the U.S. was here. I came to the U.S. by myself and had no friends at all. So this was a good place to come on weekends by myself. I immediately loved this park and repeatedly come here. Besides, there is a good roadbiking road to this park, so I could come to this park by bike. It was good for a person without car.

This area has many other parks and roads are hilly. So it is very popular for roadbikers. Later I joined a road biking club and biked 20 miles in this area every Wednesday evening after work. Many bikers actually stop at Arastradero, because there are restrooms and water can be refilled here. Also bikers can rest a little and appreciate the pretty green hills here.

San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge Hike

Japanese journal after English version

I love San Francisco Bay Area. One of the most iconic places in the area is Golden Gate Bridge. Golden Gate Bridge (GGB) is a bridge that connects San Francisco city and the East Bay. It has a famous red color. San Francisco, as known as a fog city, GGB is often in the fog. Sometimes it is completely covered with fog, sometimes beautifully stands on the carpet of fog. As such many foggy days, it is extremely happy to see the entire GGB under sun with blue ocean.

On a sunny day, crossing over GGB by walking, hike the hills and looking at GGB from higher point is really pleasant San Franciscoish hike. Once I did that by hiking 16 miles a day.

GGB over the hill

I started hiking near the GGB of San Francisco side. Then crossed the bridge northbound. There are several ways to cross GGB; walking, running, biking, and driving. I have done all the methods, and liked all.

When you run the bridge, you can notice that each side of GGB is much lower than the center of bridge. Even a slight uphill is hard when you run. GGB sidewalks are open each side to different methods. One side of the sidewalks is for walkers and runners and the other for bikers so that there is no chaos. However, once in a while, you can run on the car lanes. Yes, on the day of San Francisco Marathon day! I ran on the car lanes and it was awesome!

When you walk on GGB on a sunny day, you can see nice blue ocean and San Francisco city. The structure of bridge looks much bigger when you see it on pictures or even driving.

On the 16-mile hike day, after crossing bridge, I climbed up and down on the rolling hills in the Marin Headlands, which is a big park in the area. Hills are very pretty with green. There are many view points with mountains, hills, and beaches. One of the most photogenic point is a view with GGB, San Francisco city with ocean.

Every time I see GGB over the ocean, I feel that I am very fortunate to see the spectacular scenery. I feel I am at one point of earth that gives me refreshing power.

Sunrise Hike in Tilden Regional Park

<Japanese post after English version:

It is nice to see sunrise in mountains.

Sunrise

One day I went to Tilden Regional Park to see sunrise at the top. To reach at the top of the hill before sunrise, obviously you need to start hiking way before sunrise. That part is tough: I am a night person. Also you need to walk with a head lamp. However, I knew it would be rewarding, so I did!

Tilden Park is near Berkeley and there are many people live in this area, especially many students due to UC Berkeley. It is very popular for local people to hike in Tilden. However, nobody is usually there before sunrise. Most undergrads don't get up before sunrise, of course. I brought Jetboil and coffee instant packages to sip coffee while I would be watching sunrise.

As planned, I reached the top of hills and sat down to wait for sunrise. Jetboil's flare gave me some light. After a few sips of coffee, I noticed that sun was coming. Then after a couple of more sips, sun started rising over the undulating mountains. It was a beautiful, peaceful, and pretty sunrise.

I like sunrise view, because every moment is different. Sky is gradually getting orange, then the moment sun comes up, it was special. The sunrise is like flare.

Sunrise in the mountain top is usually very quiet, because normal people don't climb up so early or camp there. It is priceless (and actually it is free activity).

Eucalyptus

On the way back, I was able to see surrounding things and noticed there are many eucalyptus. There are many eucalyptus trees in California. I love them because it gives me comfortable feelings. When I was in Japan, I thought that eucalyptus was only in Australia for koalas, but I find them in California a lot.

When crowd was arriving the park, I left there and ate big breakfast in Berkeley downtown before crowd would come for brunch.

Sunrise in Tilden: recommended, but you need to be determined.

San Bruno Mountain State Park Day Hiking

You can enjoy a variety of views at San Bruno State Park!

1. San Francisco Bay

2. San Francisco city in the distance

3. Pacific Ocean

4. San Francisco Airport and Airplane

5. Bay Bridge

6. Green Hills

7. Racoon Family

8. Mt. Tamalpais in the distance

From the list above, you can guess where this park is. It is really nice area. Probably this is one of only a couple of parks that allow you to see such a variety of view. All of the listed views are very iconic for San Francisco Bay Area.

In the picture above, you can see SF city and the Bay Bridge easily. When I climb the hill at this park, I would think that I really live in the Bay Area. I would appreciate the opportunity. Hiking always gives me time to appreciate not only nature but also situation where I am.  Working in science at a good institution, having body to be able to hike, run, walk, and having eyes to see the beauty of this world. On busy weekdays, there is not much time to reflect and think where I am. For that, go outside and hike is important.

Racoon family is not always found here, but is you are lucky yes. I usually see racoon at night while camping, but this time I saw family during daytime. The mother seems to be protecting kids behind her (the picture in the left).

Another thing about this park is that you can see this park from San Francisco Airport (SFO). Of course, if you can see SFO from this park, you can see this park from SFO. The point is that you can see this park even if you are just in transit at SFO. A couple of months ago, I was layover at SFO for several hours. From big window this park came into my eyes and brought back my memories of this hike. It was really nice feeling.

Briones Regional Park Day Hiking

Briones Regional Park is in the East Bay of San Francisco Bay Area in California. East Bay has many hiking parks. When hills are green, it is very pretty.

The picture below was taken in Briones Regional Park. It is very typical and nice scenery in East Bay. Rolling hills with some green trees, undulating hills, then Mount Tamalpais. Mount Tamalpais is located in East Bay and it has an iconic shape and it can be found from everywhere. Its nickname, Mt.Tam is handsome from any angles. I consider that is one of the great mountains' feature.

A lot of parks are used as ranch, so you see many cows in these parks (left picture). It is kind of fun.

Sometimes cows are on the trail. Usually they run away when hikers get close. Once in a while, they don't move at all and need to carefully pass them.

Livestock is nice to see, but wildlife is always very special. On this hike, I saw a coyote! He looks healthy cute. I was so excited. Seeing wildlife is not very often, therefore it is precious and exciting.

Salt Point State Park Day Hiking

<Japanese version is after English:

There are so (literally, sooooooooooo) many parks along the ocean in California. In this entry, I will introduce Salt Point State Park. This park is located about 100 mile/160 km north of San Francisco.

Because this park is not too close to San Francisco, there are much less hikers. It is nice to walk quietly.

There are scenic trails along the ocean, and there are sandy beaches to sit down. Looking at big big blue Pacific Ocean is gorgeous. In spring, there are many wild flowers, such as California poppies. In geologically, a lot of sandy rocks are seen in this area.

One more special thing about this park is seals. There are many seals in the park. Some are resting on the rocks, some are swimming. They are lazy and cute.

FYI, Park official site is here https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=453
